Open air jeep gliding past the romantic roads of Chandigarh, lined with flower-laden trees, cool breeze of spring, and a handsome dude by her side – What more could have Tanvi asked for? It was a scene straight out of her dreams.
And then they left the city behind. There was a sparsely populated village, a kutcha road, and slowly even the kutcha road disappeared. Rocky terrain, huge boulders, slush pits, dry river crossing– it was absolute wilderness.
Soon, they were joined by more heavy duty 4X4 jeeps and adrenalin pumping adventurists. While other pro members have already been on Himalayan Riders and Mountain drivers, Tanvi, the only newbie in the group was trying to understand the meaning of term ‘off-roading’ and what it entails. Off-roading is no joke. It is not for the faint hearted. It jolts and awakens every muscle in your body and alerts the brain. It was the most impetuous date that Tanvi had ever experienced.
Off-roading is all about the adrenalin rush, the adventure and the zest to go through all the tribulations till the end. Nothing can make you more alive than this. While you are on an off- roading adventure you completely forget the mundane tensions and stresses in life.
Tanvi was shouting like mad and trying to hold anything that she can while the jeep jumped off the ground, bumped on the boulders, danced sideways only on two wheels, smashed in mud pit, knocked down jungle moss growth, alarmed the cattles around, and thumped hard on the ground.
It was one hell of a ‘so-called first date’ and broke the ice between them for sure!
Major Dalbir, high on adrenalin and grinning from cheek to cheek, brimming with pride on completion of the track in record time, asked Tanvi, “So, how was it?”
Tanvi with her hair on her hands still raisen, trying to bring her heartbeat to normal, uttered, “I need a drink after this”.
“Ha, ha, ha! That’s the way you end an ideal day in Army”, Dalbir laughed his lungs out.
It was sunset when they drove back on tar highway road towards the city. Classic English songs was playing on the jeep’s music system; Tanvi was smiling and rolling her hair with fingers, attentively listening to Dalbir.
Suddenly, another car with half rolled down windows and loud music zipped pass so close that Dalbir had to swirl the jeep, almost like a stimulus reaction; on the side slipping on the walking path. Dalbir couldn’t contain his anger, “stupid people”, he uttered with clenched teeth. The men in the car not only abused Dalbir but also challenged him to catch them. Dalbir grew angrier and accelerated the car. Tanvi tried to stop him in vain and pleaded that it is not wise to fall for the road rage trap. Obviously, the men in the car were drunk and simply inciting them to have some fun and adrenalin rush.
A few meters ahead, two men from the car popped their heads out, abused Dalbir using racial comments and started hurling beer bottles towards them. A few broke on the road while one hit the windscreen and cracked it badly.
