Suhasini was smiling, getting herself clicked, posing with the new relatives but from inside she felt torn apart. She was good in academics. Her heart was still in college where her friends were attending classes and preparing for exams, staying awake late in the night and discussing Plato over cups of tea and maggie. Suhasini was missing on all this fun. Here she was compelled to fake participation in meaningless traditions like who gets the ring first from the pot.
Suhasini didn’t shed even a tear on her ’bidai’. Her frustration was building. She was frustrated with herself, of not able to stand up, of not having the guts to run away from house and hiding inside her hostel, of not being more determined. Now, all her life she will have to follow these stupid traditions and live with this stranger who had no idea how sad Suhasini was.
After a few days of complying by all the martial rituals, Suhasini and her husband were ceremonially sent off to enjoy their honeymoon to Goa, on a 4 nights 5 days standard package. Now was the time when finally she was away from the irritating cacophony of over-excited relatives. She was constantly thinking of how much her life has changed, she was loathing and blaming her boyfriend for it was because of exposure of this relationship that the marriage was rushed otherwise she could have atleast completed her Masters degree.
When the new hubby expected a mushy start to his life, trying to come close to her; Suhasini shunned him too. She behaved cold, lost and disinterested. This went on for 2 days into honeymoon. They were not talking. They were not holding hands. She was not blushing.
Finally, on third day, drained of this unconventional behaviour from his new bride, the husband spoke. After all, he had arranged marriage straight out of textbooks and he expected his wife to behave exactly the way it is supposed to be, no exceptions allowed.
He raised objection. She lost her cool and vented out. For he was merely a stranger for her at that point of time; and a stranger who had spoilt her life and now was demanding her to be submissive unquestionably. Why should she? She finally rebelled.
The new husband was taken aback. He had sensed some problem but couldn’t gauge the magnitude of frustration and hatred for him in Suhasini’s eyes. The honeymoon was not going as per preconceived definition of honeymoon should.
“What now?”the new husband asked.
Suhasini had no answer to this. She was infact scared. She had no strength to fight hypocrite and selfish people who are only concerned about their ego and social status.
Suhasini was crying inconsolably. The door closed with a bang. The new husband had left her alone behind.
