North Goa was buzzing with people, music, food and dance. You don’t even need to enter a disco to groove. Big screens in the portico of hotels, seating arrangements made in the open and all forms of music – afro jazz, electro, fusion, trance – coming in from all sides and merging into one melodious groove. Music in Goa sets the party mood. Happy and excited young couples emulating hippie fashion style were zipping past in their hired two-wheelers. Goa was ready to party.
Tanvi was dressed to kill. In her short black dress her feminine side was highlighted. She went to Tito’s and was grooving to the tunes of David Guetta. There were girls who were climbing up the stand and shaking their booties amidst loud cheers. On a fag sharing session Tanvi got along well with a group of 4 boys and 2 girls who had driven from Pune to enjoy their weekend. Being frequent weekender visitors of Goa, they had plans to hop pubs tonight. Tanvi liked the idea and joined the bandwagon.
The cool gang hit Mambos next. They ordered a few drinks, danced to music, didn’t enjoy the DJ much and moved on to next party venue. It was Club Cabana now. Perched on a hilltop, this place was exquisite. The decor colour was white. Plush and comfortable recliner sofas beds with white candles on small tables under the moon besides the pool, was truly a poetic setting. Some of the sit outs had an overhead tent with sheer curtains flowing down giving the much required privacy. You could see innumerable lights of Goa twinkling below, a sight to behold!
It was almost 3 in the morning. Girls of the group were not only drunk but were having bouts of vomiting too. The boys were still in full josh, and the rounds of Tequilla shots continued. The excitement was growing. Tanvi was also quite drunk, though she was still in control. A guy from the group whom everyone called Avi was giving Tanvi subtle glances every now and then, and striking conversation with Goan music as background score. Avi was the most responsible one in the group making sure that the girls remain safe.
Avi was an intern lawyer and had just completed her law degree from Pune. His patriotism was infectious and his knowledge about India’s social-political and legal nexus was commendable. He was narrating the inside stories of popular court cases and the arguments that we put made sense even in the inebriated state that the group was in. He was a prolific speaker. Tanvi quite liked Avi’s zeal and his style while he discussed heavy subjects like Arushi murder case and JNU sedition cases. Avi was beaten by police while he protested during Nirbhaya case. In an another case of rape of an African woman, Avi helped her report the case and used his pressure to speed-fast the case running along with the night search patrol to nab the culprits overnight. Avi was an activist but a balanced one. His blue eyes and dimple on right cheek belied his intelligence.
It was now time to up the game of the night and head in search of intense psychedelic music towards Anjuna beach and rave party.
