It was not usual to get a mail from HR on a happy, long weekend. Everyone knows how HR guys have the maximum fun in office. They go on off-sites and have team building dinners at the drop of a hat. They can’t be possibly working on a weekend. The mail must have been timed to auto-deliver. Hardly, she knew that this mail has an earthquake like impact that will jolt her out of the monotonous life and will demand to be readjusted.
“Dear Ms Tanvi,
We regret to inform you that Benson Incorporated will be going through a series of layoffs that will include your current position with the company. Due to poor sales and poor financial performance, Benson Incorporated will be laying off up to 35 percent of its workforce. We find this decision difficult, but it was the only way for the company to avoid bankruptcy.
Benson Incorporated values each employee in the organization, but you were hired only one year ago and do not have the seniority required to stay with the company. We are committed to offering the best possible opportunities to our employees and we feel that this unfortunate decision was the only one we could make at this time.
Please report to your supervisor on your next scheduled shift and turn in your company identification badge and sign the necessary paperwork. Upon signing the paperwork, you will be presented with a paper check that will represent your final pay, your vacation pay due and your severance pay.
Regards,
David Cooper
HR Director
Benson International”
Was this actually happening to her? Though layoff rumours were lately making rounds in office but she never thought the over-qualified, hard-working, keeping her business to herself type of employee that Tanvi was, will be thrown out of the office.
There is a thing about termination letters. More than the pain of losing your job, more than the stress of financial plausibility and the domino effect that it will bring to your life; it is the shame and embarrassment that it brings. It’s like a red faced boss shouting on you, “Get Out. You are Fired”. Worst is to face the colleagues. Most of them curious to know the juicy story, some over sympathetic and even if they are not but you end up imagining them giggling behind your back and sticking a loser tag at you. Termination letter is a big question mark to your self-esteem. Are you not good enough?
With an impending question mark on self-esteem hanging over her head, ground beneath her feet shaking, trembling hands, frown on her forehead and a parched throat, Tanvi kept on staring at the now blacked out mobile screen. She was hit by a life-altering earthquake.
Mummyji entered the room with her red and white checker duster cloth loosely hanging over her shoulder, hair messily tied in a her bun and flower printed nighty that had evident proofs of her bring a good home maker with stains of oil and haldi all over.
